Granted Rishon LeZion wouldn’t be on top of your bucket list when visiting Israel.
However, apart from its’ great stretch of sandy beach, which is truly marvelous, Rishon LeZion now boasts the newly opened Yaacov Agam Museum.
Yaacov Agam is internationally known as being the father of the Kinetic Art Movement. He was born and raised in Rishon LeZion and hence the location of this Museum. Yaacov Agam is presently 89 years old.
His works are internationally acclaimed and have been displayed in several international exhibitions and in museums like the MoMa and Guggenheim in New York as well as in the Pompidou Center in Paris.
Agam is known for his colorful visual work and the museum portrays this.
The museum is housed in a new building designed and built especially for the museum – there is I am told a short movie which is screened at the museum describing the building.
In the piazza outside the museum, in the entrance and in the main hall there are pillars called “The Pillars of Clila” named after Yaacov Agam’s late wife. Inside the museum there is a vibrant and very colorful long exhibit called “The Panoramagam” which used to be exhibited in The Guggenheim Museum in New York. The exhibit covers curved walls which enhance its’ vitality.
If you visit Tel Aviv take a look at the facade of the Dan Hotel from the beach side, from the Tel Aviv Promenade – this too is Agam’s work. Also at The Tel Aviv Museum of Art, worth a visit regardless, Agam’s work “Pace of Time” is a permanent exhibit.
if you are in or near Rishon LeZion this museum is well worth the visit – one probably needs only an hour or two to enjoy the museum.
The Museum is easily accessible and is open Monday to Thursday 10:00-19:00, Tuesday and Wednesday 10:00-16:00 and Saturday 10:00-14:00.
There is an entrance fee.
