I love swimming in the sea. One of the highlights of my recent Australian trip was definitely snorkeling on The Great Barrier Reef.
The Great Barrier Reef, inscribed on The World Heritage List, extends 2,000 km along Australia’s Queensland Coast. It is the world’s largest coral reef ecosystem. The Great Barrier Reef also, not surprisingly, makes the list of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World.
I was warned, more than once, that going during the Wet Season (we were there end of February beginning of March) was not a particularly good idea. During this time of the year the weather can be most unfavorable. It is thunderstorm time with the very real possibility of cyclones. Additionally, stingers and crocodiles are prevalent in the waters during this period. I took the gamble and still smile even as I write this post reminiscing the most amazing experience snorkeling on The Great Barrier Reef.
We spent the entire day snorkeling on The Great Barrier Reef with Wavelength Reef Charters . The boat leaves from The Wharf in Port Douglas. I cannot recommend this company enough.
The day was superbly well organized and structured. The ‘guides’ are all passionate marine biologists which made for an extremely interesting, thought provoking and enjoyable day. We wore stinger suites from head to toe. The amazing fish, coral and entire crew combined to make this a memorable special day . It was fun, informative and humbling to experience The Great Barrier Reef.
Sad too however, very sad in fact, to see first-hand the results of too frequent bleaching caused by global warming.
Go visit The Great Barrier Reef before more bleaching destroys more of this most incredible World Heritage phenomena!
I was to busy snorkeling and marveling at the spectacular world under the water – hence no photos!
